Mystory

I completed a mystory. A mystory is a kind of pedagogical project developed by Gregory Ulmer in his book Teletheory and Internet Invention to explore conductive image based logic. His work explores the move from literacy to electracy. The point is to persuade yourself. It is a logic not based on understanding, but undergoing.

“To approach knowledge from the side of not knowing what it is, from the side of one who is learning, not from the that of one who already knows, is mystory.”
–Gregory Ulmer, Teletheory

There are four categories–lines of discourse:
CAREER | FAMILY | ENTERTAINMENT | COMMUNITY.

The theme for my line of thought became the suit. We wear them. They professionalize us. They are masks. They enable and hinder.

My personal emblem became a yellow robot with a tie.

Here it is. Enjoy.

The Gradgrind Society

The Gradgrind Society is an alternate reality game that was established as a kind of electronic monument to the idea of play. The work was installed on the Clemson University campus that began with black business cards with thegradgrindsociety.com printed on them. The cards were placed in books in the campus library–rarely a site of explicit play.

This short story exists all in one simple page of html, and functions using a random text generator that employs javascript.  The lines of the story are all interchangeable creating a unique experience each time the story is deployed.  Two inspirations for this work are Nick Montfort’s poem “The Two” and Eric Rosenblum’s “Shorter Finnegans Wake.”

A poem for my wife.

CC

In order to show you, tell, keep, find you,

I can curl

Up against your body at night

Away from the clamoring cold.

Like two “c”s, we build a made-up word together,

Our bodies making it

Unpronounceable.

There are no vowels necessary.

In this poor grammar of love we make a made-up world together too.

It is better than the reality that lies in wait for us outside of our home.

Still.  There are too many miserable failed ways

That I have not shown, not told…

Here I write it though… making it closed-captioned

So that you may see see it,

A carbon copy of what’s already written way down,

Deep

On our hearts

By God himself

Before either one of us was born, or written

Before the first word was written—

Before a holy math that made 2=1.

There is no way to say it well…

But I’ll keep showing, telling, keeping, finding words,

Deeds,

Time,

And you.

Grammar Plan Poem

I wrote this list while trying to devise a set of grammar review lessons.

It looked like a poem to me.
